Around here, fall is our busiest and happiest time of the year. Like everyone else, we love the cool temps, changing colors and pumpkin spice everything. And we love that we get to see our favorite families for their annual fall photo sessions. Every year we get asked for advice on how to dress for family photos, and our resident stylist Lindsay has assembled this helpful list of tips to look your best for your session.

LEAVE ENOUGH TIME TO PLAN
Think about what the look and feel you want the photos to have. Do you want a casual, vintage, modern, or simplistic look? Once you have a "theme" shop your closet and your favorite stores to start pulling options together. Chose ONE outfit you love first, this than becomes your "base" and you can start working around it. Laying everything out on your bed together helps you visualize how everyone will look next to each other. Feel free to than snap a photo of it and send it to us, we are happy to give some suggestions!

CONSIDER TEXTURE AND LAYERS
Adding dimension creates interest in your images. For the boys, wear a classic plain tee under a cool checkered shirt, or add a vest over a shirt and roll the cuffs. For the girls you can add a jean jacket, fur vest, cardigan, or fun tights. Layers also can help keep everyone warm!

LIMIT PATTERNS AND GRAPHICS
Limit your patterns through out the group, but don't be afraid to have a few mixed in! A floral print dress with a small checked dress shirt in the same color range looks great together, we always suggest choosing three colors to use throughout the group. We know how much your little ones love a superhero shirt but we strongly recommend to stay away from graphic shirts as it can be very distracting in the photo. This is when layering can help, let them wear the shirt and put a sweater over it ;)

EMBRACE ACCESSORIES
They are easy to dress up or down and can make for fun interaction during your session. It's that finishing touch that brings everything together. This is also a great spot to add in some pops of color or texture as well. Think about scarves, belts, headbands, suspenders, a newsboy cap, and jewelry. Shoes can also be a fun way to really finish off a look!

DRESS FOR COMFORT
If someone is not comfortable in what they are wearing, it will show in the images. Trust us!!! Make sure you have each child try on any new items you purchase for the session. We often see children in new shoes they can not walk in, or pants that are falling off. For moms, make sure you have undergarments that make you feel great and won't show through your clothes.
